“Despite everything, Istanbul is an organic city that grows by layering. The texture of the city is created moment by moment by living things and moving objects, big and small stories appear, disappear, transform before our eyes. Until recently, peddlers’ PVC coating machines were wandering in Karaköy, the center of the small economy. A woman’s voice emanating from the weak speakers of these machines would make the following announcement that has stuck in my mind: “Cover your ID cards, bus cards, photos with PVC”. The reason I intended to work with pvc material, which is sold in a small shop selling office supplies, was because of the peddlers. Carta Poli is a mapping experimet, it tries to create the layered, chaotic panorama of Istanbul with pvc. It is homage to the metropolis of meaninglessness and transience by glorifying the vanishing small economy, frayed identities, and all the little creatures that made Istanbul a giant.” Ceren Oykut, Berlin, August 2023
